Men drink tea at an outdoor tea shop that sits below a ruined building in the Shor (Shur) Bazaar district the old city of Kabul Afghanistan. Much of Kabul was destroyed in the mid 1990's (1992-1996) in factional fighting between rival mujahideen commanders for control of the capital after the Soviet's withdrawal and now Afghans are re-building their lives and business amongst the ruins. Further destruction was inflicted when the Taliban took Kabul in 1996 and when the USA- backed Northern Alliance re-took Kabul in 2001. An ancient city located at 1800 meters along the Kabul River and capital of Kabul Province and Afghanistan since 1770 Kabul was a thriving city of 1 million in the late 1970's. Now teeming with refugees returning from Pakistan Iran and other countries the city still lacks much of the basic amenities of life-water electricity sanitation communications.
