The Indian elephant is one of four extant recognised subspecies of the Asian elephant and native to mainland Asia. Since 1986, the Asian elephant has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List as the wild population has declined by at least 50% since the 1930s to 1940s, three elephant generations. The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), also known as the Asiatic elephant, is the only living species of the genus Elephas. Indian elephants are incredibly intelligent and expressive. They are about to feet in height and weigh about 6000 to 11,000 pounds.
