The units train under the direction of and with the Forest Service, which owns the MAFFS. MAFFS are loaded onto C-130 Hercules cargo planes, turning the aircraft into aerial firefighting platforms. There are four Air Force units that fly MAFFS missions. The 146th Airlift Wing, California Air National Guard, and the 302nd Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, are the other two MAFFS units.
