Hand Tooling, then, consists of using thefinishers hand tools to work out all decorations uponthe book, whether they be a few simple straightlines, or a combination of lines and other designs,workedout into a harmonious whole, suited to thecharacter of the book, and in good taste. IO7 The following illustrations of decorative finishinghave been made from photographs of books whichwere all designed and executed by pupils who haveattended the bookbinding classes held at the Actonand Chiswick Polytechnic, Bedford Park, London, Fig. 79. These should be of interest in showing the progressmade by pupils who but a few years ago were be-ginners. We trust that those among our readers whoare just entering the ranks of would-be bookbinderswill receive some stimulus from these illustrations. 108 PRACTICAL BOOKBINDING. which should induce them to go forward until they,by careful and persistent application, and constantpractice, will be able to achieve similar success. Andwe can promise that their efforts will be to themsuch a source of pleasure, and the finished books willbecome such delightful possessions to themselvesand their friends, that they will be repaid tenfold forthe labour and time bestowed upon their work.
