Sanana gold mine, Guinea, 2nd May 2015; Miners digging their plots in the dry-season heat.
Sanana mine, Guinea, 2nd May 2015; Sanana mines, 12 km from Gbderedou Baranama village, will be flooded by the Fomi dam. More than 500 people work here during the dry season. Some are lucky and make good finds, others may not. This particular area has only been mined for two years. The men are digging what they hope is good quality ore. This ore is checked for gold by young men with battery-powered gold detectors. The ore that gives a good signal is kept by the miners, who pack it in plastic bags. The women who then grind this ore are watched closely by the miners. The women are paid a small percentage in gold for their work. A few miners have been lucky, one got 350 grams of gold from his mine in one month.
