To FACE PAGE 87 IV SARCOMATOUS CHANGE 87 Microscopic Appearances of Sarcomatous Transformation.—Cullen shows that there are two varieties :— (i) Sarcomatous metaplasia of the connective-tissue cells. (2) Sarcomatous metaplasia of the muscle-cells. Figures 98 and 99, Plate XXVI., demonstrate the lattercondition, whilst Figures 98a and 99a show the samesections under a high power. (i) Cullen states that Virchow was the first to describethe former variety, and that his description is as follows : At certain points the intercellular substance commences togrow, the cells increase through division, thus more andmore round cells are formed, at first small, later largerand larger and with bigger nuclei. Meanwhile the inter-cellular substance becomes less, and more rarefied; and whilethe stroma increases, the muscle disappears
