Bromyard In Herefordshire, UK, is a real, old-fashioned market town where everyone is friendly and the shops are stuffed with the wildest variety of goods. The Downs are just a mile up the road from Bromyard on the B4203, and a good place for some fresh air. Local residents have grazing rights over the land. There are some quarries here that produced the distinctive red sandstone bricks which were used to build the local houses. Bromyard museum celebrates the hop-growing industry, with fascinating displays of Bromyard in earlier times. Although the church does not have any outstanding monuments, it is worth a visit just for the pleasure of strolling through the churchyard and enjoying the peace of the house of God. There are several lovely black and white half-timbered buildings in and around the town (most famous of all is Brockhampton). Seemingly abandoned tipper trucks and sections of rail bear witness to an aborted attempt to revive the narrow guage railway that once served the area. Bromyard Down, behind the town, is an open hillside where you can stretch your legs and fill your lungs with fresh air. The countryside around Bromyard is rich in lovely village churches, thatched and half-timbered buildings surrounded by green fields, ancient hill forts and public footpaths that lead to the loveliest hidden locations. Bromyard is mentioned in a charter of c. 840 as Bromgeard ("enclosure where broom or gorse grew" (or perhaps "fenced in by gorse") and in Domesday Book as Bromgerde. 42 villani (villeins, villagers), 9 bordars (smallholders), and 8 slaves were recorded in the Domesday entry, one of the largest communities in Herefordshire. Like Leominster, Ledbury, and Ross-on-Wye, the town of Bromyard was founded in the early 12th century, probably in the episcopate of Richard de Capella (1121-1127).
