Malmo City Library, Malmo, Sweden. Architect: Henning Larsen Architects, 1999. Restored central atrium of old library building.
Malmö City Library consists of three elements: the old 1901 library building, a cylindrical entrance foyer and the glass-walled new library, all linked by glass corridors. The original glass-covered atrium of the old building has been also been restored. Henning Larsen describe the new building as a 'calendar of light': daylight floods into the atrium through huge floor-to-ceiling windows, changing with the seasons in the surrounding park. The Library attracts over one million visitors a year, and acts as a focal point for the diverse communities in Sweden's leading multicultural city. It has won several awards, including the Kasper Salin Prize and the Malmö City Architecture Award.
