A native ofVirginia, he was born in parents, John and Mary(Daniels) Fifer, were Americanborn, though of German de-scent. His father was a brickand stone mason, and an oldHenry Clay Whig in polities. John and MaryFifer had nine children, o/whom Joseph was thesixth, and naturally, with so large a family, it wasall the father could do to keep the wolf from thedoor, to say nothing of giving his children any-thing like good educational advantages.
