Sandstone cliffs. View of the sandstone cliffs near West Bay, Dorset, UK. These cliffs are composed of Bridport Sands, which were laid down in a shallow, tropical sea about 180 million years ago (Middle Jurassic). Alternating with the soft sand are protruding harder bands of rock where the sand has been cemented together with calcite and is much more resistant to weathering. This coast is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
