An expired chip and pin credit card. The picture shows the data chip being cut in half with a pair of scissors, a security measure before disposal of the card. The chip on the card is a data processor, and is rendered completely unusable by being cut through. Chips were introduced to improve the security of cards; since they are active processing units, they can communicate in encrypted form with the machine into which they are inserted; this is in contrast to a magnetic stripe, which merely transfers customer details in a \dumb\" fashion. Modern cards do not even need to be in physical contact with the payment terminal (wireless, contactless cards). However secure the card may be in use, it should nevertheless always be cut up when it expires"
