Instant corn-soy blend (ICSB). This food product was developed by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), part of the US Department of Agriculture. It is an instant form of corn-soy blend, which is a mix of maize (corn, Zea mays) and the beans (soybeans) of the soya plant (Glycine max). ICSB can be extruded (lower left), ground into a powder (lower right), and mixed with tepid water to produce a porridge (bowl, top). ICSB is designed for the addition of vitamins and minerals to emergency aid meals, particularly for young children. This product, the result of a research programme started in the 1990s, was announced by the USDA in 2011.
