Healthy stomach. Endoscopic view of the left section (gastric fundus) of a normal stomach, showing the characteristic ridges (gastric folds or plicae gastricae) of the mucous membrane (gastric mucosa). The endoscope (gastroscope) is in an inverted position, pointing back on itself. Its end can been seen passing out through the top of the stomach (centre right), into the oesophagus (gullet, not seen). The gastric fundus lies slightly above the rest of the stomach, sitting against the diaphragm. This allows the gases produced by digestion to accumulate in it.
