Japan: Tokugawa Ietsuna (7 September 1641 - 4 June 1680), fourth ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1651-1680). Ink on paper illustration by Kano Yasunobu (1614-1685), late 17th century. Tokugawa Ietsuna was the fourth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty and the eldest son of Tokugawa Iemitsu. When his father died in 1651, Ietsune was only ten years old. Nevertheless, he was made shogun and five regents ruled in his place. The first order of business was the brutal suppression of the Keian Uprising. Ietsune began to rule in his own right in 1671, and his reign was on the whole uneventful.
