Blue sky portrait people crossing Millennium Bridge, towards Lowry Centre, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, UK

The Millennium Bridge, Salford Quays, dates to 2000 and carries pedestrians across the Manchester Ship Canal from the Lowry Centre (background) to the Imperial War Museum North. The footbridge lifts up between the ornate towers at either end to let large vessels (pleasure craft and seasonal ferryboats to Liverpool) enter the upper reaches of Salford Quays. The bridge is 96 m long and is a bow- string arch. Coloured glass wind deflectors at the sides of the footbridge shelter pedestrians from the wind. The 16-storey tower block in the background is Imperial Point, dating to 2001 and the first high rise residential building on the Quays.
