Prior to this demonstration, the hospital had no provision for treating women with AIDS. A number of women from several ACT UP chapters around the USA briefly occupied the street in front of the Cook County building in Chicago, constructing a temporary "AIDS Ward" for women with mattresses, surrounded by "walls" made of sheets held by other protesters. The successful civil disobedience resulted in a policy change for the hospital.

Prior to this demonstration, the hospital had no provision for treating women with AIDS. A number of women from several ACT UP chapters around the USA briefly occupied the street in front of the Cook County building in Chicago, constructing a temporary "AIDS Ward" for women with mattresses, surrounded by "walls" made of sheets held by other protesters. The successful protest resulted in a policy change for the hospital. Several activists were arrested for civil disobedience during this demonstration.
