HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, Joint President of The Elephant Family, officially launches the Concours d'éléphant, a cavalcade of traditional Indian vehicles. The convoy will tour London to raise awareness of the charity's work to protect the Asian elephant. Elephant Family is an international NGO dedicated to protecting the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild. In the last fifty years their population has roughly halved and 90% of their habitat has disappeared. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall's brother Mark Shand dedicated his life to the survival of the Asian elephant and was the founding force behind the charity when it launched in 2002. His mission started in 1988 when he rescued a street begging elephant, which he named Tara.
