There is an unusual scarcity of cut flowers for this season and prices have soared even over Thanksgiving figures on soma items. This is especially true of carnations, which are so high at wholesale that the retailers have been , obliged to raise their prices to $ per dozen. Boses also are on the short side, particularly Hoosier Beauty, Richmond and Milady. Many of the local growers' stocks are either oflE crop or the cut is being held for Christmas. A few Easter lilies are offered and a scant sup- ply of snapdragon. Stevia is used in many instances in place of greens. Cat- tleyas and other orchids command ex- cellent prices. The weather during the early part of December has been dark and rainy and unseasonably warm. Nevertheless the florists have been displaying Christmas wreaths, baskets, etc., and report a good advance demand. The bulk of the trade has run to funeral work, with an occa- sional wedding and a good demand for social purposes. Flowering plants are in their prime, azaleas having made their appearance last week. Cincinnati be- gonias, cyclamens and primroses are of excellent quality and a few Christmas plants are shown, such as Jerusalem cherries and poinsettias. Various Notes. November business showed a decided increase over any previous year and if there had not been an unprecedented shortage of cut flowers, resulting in high prices, receipts would have been much larger. The second outbreak of the influenza epidemic has occurred in this city and the ban has again been placed on public gatherings, affecting schools particu- larly. Over 600
