He was the second son of Thomas JohnDavies. Until he was fifteen years of age he at-tended the public schools in the neighborhood of hishome. Black Lake, N. Y., where his parents hadsettled when he was quiteyoung. During the war of1813 Gen. Swift, chief of en-gineers of the U. S. army, vis-ited his fathers house, and be-came interested in the at once his evidenttalent and ambition, he urgedthat he should be sent to theU. S. military academy at WestPoint, and interested himselfin securing his entered the academy in1814, but did not complete thecourse, as the necessities of thewar demanded an increase ofoiflcers, and Dec. 11, 1815, hewas graduated and commis-sioned brevet second lieuten-ant of light artillery, and act-ed with this rank in garrisonat the New England posts.
