The Japanese treatment of water, as of other forms, ismost ingeniously ornamental, and is valuable as a course of studyby all wo )d-carvers. The Japanese appear to think, < r to see, allobjects in what we call a decorative way, , they develop theornamental possibilities of the object, or else simplify it by showinggreat restraint in rendeiing it. (though this must not be overdone, for there must be noattempt to give the appearance of real leaves). I like tosee a certain severity, even a touch of the barbarian, aboutwood carving. I hate work which is as smooth as wax, andwhere every roughness and tool mark is polished the tool marks show.
