Oranges packed in a mesh bag (net polybag) made from a synthetic mesh material such as the plastic polymer polyethylene. This form of container is used to transport potatoes, fruit and vegetables. Though plastics are considered safe, hygienic, lightweight and durable and in this case, breathable, they are largely non-biodegradable, and where plastic waste ends up in the marine environment, particularly microplastics, they are harming aquatic animals. Some consider there is no alternative to landfill for wastes which are non-recyclable and non-combustible. Paper is fully recyclable and combustible but small paper bags are usually only suitable for short-term storage and transportation.
