Close up photos of the builders model of USS Maine (ACR 1) on display at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. The ship model is on loan from NAVSEA, and is on prominent display at the museum. On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine sank after a massive explosion ripped through her hull while she was at Havana, Cuba. The incident was one of the tipping points that led to the Spanish-American War. One of her survivors was John Henry Turpin, a messman at the time; who would later become one of the US Navy's first African-American Chief Petty Officers in 1917.
