In winterthe climate is mild and balmy; in summer cool and equabihty of the cUmate is due to the proximity of the GulfStream and the island being surrounded by water. Water ab-sorbs heat, and parts with it by radiation more slowly than theland; hence in hot weather the water is comparatively cooler thanthe air while in cold weather it is warmer.
