In making the selection, the writer has been guidedby the wish to choose those lives which appear to himto be most likely to interest yoimg readers, and whichalso exhibit most clearly, either by example or con-trast, the beauty of patriotism and the nobility ofthe manly virtues of justice, courage, fortitude, andtemperance. The selected lives have been freely retold. Thediscursive reflections, in which Plutarch frequentlyindulges, have been generally omitted; so also havemany proper names not necessary to the full under-standing of the stories. But, while much has beenomitted, the wiiter has not presumed to add matter,other than seemed necessary to explain the importanceor bearing of events, or to make the narrative clear toyoung readers.
