Australia New South Wales Lightning Ridge is a small opal mining town inlands in northern New South Wales Opals where discovered here in the 1880 s the town slowly appeared around the mining fields Today the town is known for it s black opals which is recognised as the most valueable of them all They aren t actually black they just have a very dark underlying colour which gives more intense colours on the face Unlike other opal mining towns the population does not live underground as the rock is too damp
