His farm lies on the Gravel Road, some five miles fromLansing. He has tended the toll-gate fourteen years, andhis father tended it some seven years previous ; iu fact, eversince the road was built it has been kept by some one of theProctor family. In religious belief Mr. Proctors views are liberal. Mr. Proctors grandfather on his mothers side, JosephDane, was a commissioned officer in the Revolutionary army,and was present at the battle of Bunker JAMES N. SMITH. JAMES N. SMITH. This gentleman, one of the leading agriculturists of Cen-tral Michigan, was born in the town of Hector, TompkinsCo., N. Y., April 20, 1830, and was the eldest in thefamily of Jonas and Mary (Gilmore) Smith, which con-sisted of six. The elder Smith was a fanner, was bornin Tompkins County in 1807, and married in Februaryof 1829. In 1833 he removed with his family to San-dusky Co., Ohio, where he resided until his death. liewas a man of more than ordinary ability, and was one ofthe prominent citizens of the county. He held variouspositions of trust and responsibility, notably among thenumber that of sheriff and county commissioner; thelatter position he filled acceptably for six years. He heldthe office of justice of the peace for eighteen years. Hewas an energetic and successful farmer, and acquired a37 competency.
