This group of claims was being prospected in the springof 1918 by the Sun Development Co., of Philadelphia, and TrumboBrothers, of Havana. The country rock in this locality is of igneousorigin and consists of tuff, agglomerate, and latite, with latite-phonoliteand latite-porphj-ry phases. Limestone is reported also to occur here.^Masses of jasper, locally known as bayate, are associated with theseigneous rocks much as they are with limestone and sandstone northeastof Santiago. There are also remnants of stratified tuffaceous, sandydeposits, more or less cemented by manganese oxides, overlying theigneous Fig. 21.—Fifteen miles south-southwest of Bayamo, Cuba. Manganese-ohe BOULDERS ON BUEY RhER SLOPE, CoSTA CLAIiM. The Costa claim, which covers 209 ha., lies along an east-west ridgenorth of Buey River, the manganese-ore deposits having been foundchiefly along the summit and down the south slope, at altitudes from600 to 800 ft. (182 to 243 m.). Along the summit of the ridge there aremany small knobs capped by jasper; six of these have been found to carrymanganese ore replacing the jasper. Float boulders of jasper more or lessreplaced by manganese ore are thickly distributed at one place on thesouth slope of the ridge. Some of these boulders, the exterior of whichwas almost wholly of manganese oxide, are 4 to 6 ft. ( to m.)in diameter; see Fig. 21. with the jasper replacement depositsare masses of lean granular ore that may have resulted from cementa-tion by manganese oxidc^ of gi-ains of feldspar from disintegratedporphyritic beds.
