Detail of folding, lines and pockets of quartz in brightly coloured sandstone cliff, Porth Saint, Rhoscolyn, Anglesey, North Wales, UK

Porth Saint, Rhoscolyn. Detail of folding, lines and pockets of feldspar or quartz in a matrix of dramatically yellow and orange coloured sandstone cliffs at the south beach. The rocks at Porth Saint are part of the South Stack Group, once believed to be the oldest on Anglesey (ie Precambrian), but are now regarded as Cambrian. The bay got its name from the story of the C6th virgin St Gwenfaen being pursued here by angry Druids, after she established a cell on the site of Rhoscolyn church. She managed to clamber onto the detached folded rock stack in the bay and was lifted to Heaven by angels.
