Thoughit is divided between the Army, theNavy and the Lighthouse Service, theNavy exercises dominion over its centralzone, which forms far the largest part ofits area. It is irregular and hilly, itshighest point being 342 feet. On thenorth side it is wooded and of pleasantaspect, but its west side is exposed andbare. Its area is about 130 acres, ofwhich 23 are covered with dense woodand brush. The Station was established in 1898,under a liberal appropriation from Con-gress, by Captain
