A yellow-banded poison dart frog (Dendrobates leucomelas), a poisonous frog, inside a terrarium in the Aquarium of Genoa, Liguria, Italy
The Aquarium of Genoa is located in the sixteenth century ancient port of the coastal city. The 2 hours and 30 minutes course includes 39 pools in addition to the 4 open-air pools of the Cetacean Pavilion. The total area of the Aquarium is 27,000 square meters. The tanks are home to about 15,000 animals of 400 different species including fish, marine mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates in environments that reproduce those originating from individual species with obvious educational purposes. The yellow-banded poison dart frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) is found in the northern part of continent of South America, most notably in Venezuela. It is also found in parts of Guyana, Brazil, and the extreme easternmost part of Colombia. Like most poison dart frogs, the yellow-banded poison dart frog has evolved aposematic colouration as a warning to potential predators that it will make an unpalatable or toxic meal.
