See also S. Birch, Ancient Pottery, p. 14. 36 THE FIRST SETTLEMENT. [Chap. II. is encircled by five concave furrows deeply impressed ; therim i: slightly bent over; the long handle, but slightlycurved, is very curious; the large perforation we see in itprobably indicates the use of the vessel, for it seems tohave been let down with a string into the well to draw upwater; the hole must also have served to suspend it on anail. I never found here a similar vessel, nor am I awarethat this form has ever occurred elsewhere. No. 9 is a very pretty lustrous black vase, with a convexfoot and an excrescence on either side perpendicularly per-forated for suspension. (Size i : 4,Deptl:, 14 m.) trivance may be seen, I must add the Prehistoric Museumof Madrid, which contains five fragments of hand-madevases found in caverns of the stone age in Andalusia, havingon each side a tubular hole for suspension. Another vase-fragment with vertical perforations for suspension, likewisefound in a cavern in Andalusia, is in the jNIuseum atCassel. The same system may be seen on several fragmentsof hand-made vases found by me in my excavations at Chap. II.] \XU-M.\DE SUSPENSION V.\SES. 37 Orchomenos in Boeotia ;* also on three
