The ores are galena and lead carbonate, sphalerite orzinc blende, and zinc carbonate and silicate. The galena is practi-cally nonargentiferous, carrying but a small fraction of an ounce ofsilver to the ton of lead concentrates. During the period of discovery and first operations of the mines inthe vicinity of Joplin small discoveries of lead ore were frequentlymade in In 1870 zinc ore was discovered on the Cook landnear Galena, and about 1872 some zinc ore from the property wassold in Joplin.
