Bamburgh Castle. Fortifications have probably existed on Bamburgh's basalt outcrop since at least the fifth century. However the core of the current castle dates from Norman times. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. The Keep dates from the reign of Henry II. During the Wars of the Roses the castle was the first English castle to be defeated by artillery. The site was the home of the Forster familly for 400 years untill 1700 when it was sold to the Bishop of Durham. The castle was purchased and substantially restored by the industrialist Lord Armstrong in the 19th Century
