Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Near- infrared images ( microns) showing the collision between fragment H of comet Shoemaker- Levy 9 and Jupiter. The images were taken at five minutes intervals beginning on July 18th 1994 at 19:21 GMT. Fragment H hit the planet at 19:26 GMT (second frame) causing the development of a flare which reached its maximum in the fourth frame. The spot seen in the bottom half of the Jovian disc in the first frame is the aftermath of the impact with fragment G which hit Jupiter on July 18th at 07:28 GMT. Two Jovian satellites Io (bottom left) and Ganymede (centre) are seen in each frame.
