This engraving illustrates how an abatis looked US Civil War times and the difficulties it presented to attackers.

In November 1863, General Robert E. Lee had concentrated his troops on the west bank of Mine Run in Virginia. Mine Run (with its marshy, timbered banks) was about 1,000 yards in front of the troops. Then, in front of this was a strong abatis, an obstruction made of a thick growth of felled pine trees. This engraving illustrates how an abatis looked and the difficulties it presented to attackers.
