Inthat year R. P. Russell commenced busi-ness, and became the pioneer merchant ofthe coming city. The second store wasopened in 1849 by William R. Marshall,afterwards governor of Minnesota. Dur-ing the same year John G. Lennon openeda branch of P. Chotean & Co. Two yearslater Franklin Steele and John H. Stevens,under the firm name of John H.
