TOMBA DELLE DUE BIOHE. 51 spirit-world; on the right door-post Charun, with bluish flesh andyellow wings, brandishes a snake to keep out intruders ; oppositehim stands a demon of doubtful gender, with yellow pinions. Astep within the tomb brings you back to mundane scenes. <)neach side of the door is a biga, drawn by horses of contrastedcolours—red and grey—the darker hue throwing out the steeds are well proportioned and full of spirit: they have broadbands about their necks, by which the}r are attached to the auriga who drives the car to the left of the door is clad in awhite tunic with a broad red meander border, and wears his hairtwisted on his crown into a high peak, like a tutulus. Thesebigce probably indicate the chariot-races which were held inhonour of the deceased. Both the aurigce had Etruscan inscrip-tions attached, now scarcely legible. In the pediment over thedoor a pair of huge bearded serpents are depicted
