Table ZII shows theresults when a constant amount of alum is used with varying amountsof lime. A satisfactory floe was obtained with grains of alumand grains of lime. The floe formed in one-half hour andsettled readily. The amount of floe obtained was practicallyequivalent to that obtained with 2 l/2 grains of alum when alum alonewas used. Owing to the cheapness of lime in comparison with alum, there would be quite a saving in the cost for chemicals used. Ifbulk lime at a cost of $ per ton is used and alum at a cost of$ per ton, we can compare the cost of the two treatments asfollows: TABLE XIII.
