Whitby harbour is sheltered by the grade II listed east and west piers each with a lighthouse and beacon. The west lighthouse seen her and built in 1831, is the taller at 84 feet ( m) and the east lighthouse, built in 1855, is 54 feet ( m) high. On the west pier extension is a foghorn that sounds a blast every 30 seconds during fog. New lights were fitted to both the lighthouse towers and the beacons in 2011. Captain Cook, born 30 miles from Whitby, first leaned his sea craft at Whitby. Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula by a visit to Whitby in 1890.
