Dozens of Romanians gathered in Trafalgar Square on the North terrace to protest against the proposed opencast goldmine at Rosia Montana in the Transylvania region of their country. The mine will use large quantities of cyanide in ts gold extraction process, which the protesters say, presents a danger to the groundwater of this important catchment area. The mine will also see the demolition of mountain peaks and villages as well as ancient Roman gold workings.
