Front view of the Skogafoss Waterfall, plunge pool and rainbow, through a rock cleft in the walk up the side, Southern Iceland

A rainbow across the top of the Skogafoss Waterfall in the spray thrown up from the immense crash of water into the plunge pool at the base of the fall. The turbulent scouring action of water in the plunge pool cuts into the cliff behind the fall, causing it to collapse periodically and the position of the fall to retreat upstream. The fall, over the cliffs of the former coastline, is a result of isostatic readjustment of the land or the land 'springing up' after the release of billions of tonnes of ice weight at the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age, so creating a prominent step in the River Skoga in its journey to the sea.
