Gulf Stream ocean temperature. Computer visualisation of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean. Colours represent temperature from blue (cold water) to green and purple to red (warm water). The swirls represent eddies and vortices in the ocean. This model is part of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) project. It was created on supercomputers at NASA using data gathered from ocean sensors and satellites. The Gulf Stream is a powerful, warm and fast-flowing ocean current. ECCO models will help scientists better understand the role the ocean plays in climate change and climate prediction.
