A girl reads in front of the statue of Janos Hunyadi riding a horse on the southeast side of Szchenyi square in front of the Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim (known locally as the Mosque Church).The statue commemorates the victory over the occupying Turkish troops in 1456. The Mosque Church is the largest building still standing from the has been chosen as the 2010 European City of Culture. The city is on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Hills and has a sub-Mediterranean climate. Settled by Romans as Sopianae, it was a significant Christian settlement. Later conquered by the Ottomans, it has important Turkish architecture.
