China: Li Guangdi (1642-1718), court official to the Kangxi Emperor. Hanging scroll painting, 18th century. Li Guangdi, courtesy name Jingqing and sobriquet Hou'an, was a Chinese neo-Confucianist who served in the Imperial court of the Kangxi Emperor. Born in Anxi County, Fujian Province, he moved to Beijing and advised the emperor in pacifying Fujian. He held various court positions throughout his life, including Chancellor of the Hanlin Academy and Governor of Zhili. He also wrote or edited a number of philosophical texts, and held an interest in the sciences.
