In civil life. General Kingsley occupies a prominent place in the businessand public affairs of the city of Rutland and in the promotion of its industriesand prosperity. He was a member of the fire department for over twentyyears and captain of the Killington Steamer Co., seventeen years. He is amember of Roberts Post, G. A. R., and of the Mihtary Order of the Lo5^alLegion of the United States. He has long been a member of different Masonicbodies, and was Grand Captain General in 1874, and later Grand Generahssimo. 1856] SKETCHES OF ALUMNI AND PAST CADETS. 577 of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Vermont. He is a memberof the Episcopal Church and has been vestryman for many years. He is aRepublican in politics and has held several offices, being president of thevillage of Rutland in 1886; selectman, 1888-92; mayor of the city of Rutlandin 1894, and State senator in 1890. In these various capacities, he has donefaithful public service and added to the respect and esteem in which he isheld by the people of his City and State. He has been twice married: first, November 12, 1857, to Luceba Janedaughter of Walter and Eliza Ross of Clarendon, Vt. She died, April 19,1862; no children. He was again married June 14, 1865, to Cornelia SophiaRoberts of Manchester, Vt., who died October 1, 1902. Two children wereborn to them: Henry Baxter, born November 21, 1867, died November 14,1903, and Harvey Roberts, born January
