Justafter the Revolution, when great in-ducements were offered to settlers togo west, the city of Berkeley spranginto existence and by these pioneersquite a settlement was founded. liythe opening of the Cumberland Canal,which wove the great west to thesea-coast, Berkeley received its great-est incentive, for then the whole.
