Antarctic research station. Researcher with the Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (AIS) instruments at the Halley research station, Antarctica. The AIS provides data on activity in the ionosphere - part of the upper atmosphere. AIS was operated first at Halley IV in 1982 and is said to be the tallest man-made structure in the Antarctic, with twin masts of almost 50 metres, from which its transmitter is hung.
