The house, built in 1700, of English writer Dr Samuel Johnson at 17 Gough Square, a quiet secluded court in the City of London. Today it is a museum.


17 Gough Square in the City of London. Dr. Samuel Johnson the writer and lexicographer lived and worked in this house from 1748 until 1759. It was while living here that he toiled at the epic task of compiling his famous and influential Dictionary of the English Language. Published on 15th April 1755 it was the first time anyone had attempted to comprehensively define every word in the language from A to Z. It took him nine years.
