Children riding velocipedes, historical illustration. The velocipede also known as the dandy horse or laufmaschine (running machine), was a two-wheeled vehicle propelled by the riders feet. It was invented in 1818 by the German inventor Baron Karl Drais and was a forerunner to the bicycle and the beginning of mechanised personal transport. Published in Munchener Bilderbogen, Germany, circa 1900.
