Sir Geraint tests Lady Enid's loyalty to him through many trials. Here they ride through a deserted Roman town.
Geraint had fallen in love with Enid, restored her father's possessions to him, and then later overhears Enid speaking of his sloth. He believes, mistakenly, that she was unfaithful to him and so has her endure a series of trials to herself constant to him. Here Sir Geraint and the Lady Enid ride through the deserted Roman town. The tale is part of Arthurian legend, which refers to the vast body of medieval story that focuses on King Arthur of Britain. The first references to him, as early as c. 600, indicate that he was historically a British leader in the Anglo-Saxon invasion, Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1137 names him the head of a magnificent court and master of Europe.
